Unfortunately, this convenience also opens the door to scammers preying on busy couples planning their big day, leaving them with nothing but disappointment and lost money. I had an enquiry from a couple last week who had been fooled into handing over a £300 deposit to a "photographer" who was totally fake. They weren't the only couple to fall for his convincing profile on Facebook, and they have no chance of recovering their money. Here's how to ensure you’re hiring a legitimate and trustworthy wedding photographer.

Take the time to thoroughly research any photographer you’re considering. Here are some steps to follow:

  • Check Their Portfolio: A genuine photographer will have a well-curated portfolio that showcases their style and experience. Look for consistency in quality and diversity in their work.

  • Read Reviews and Testimonials: Search for reviews on trusted platforms like Google, Hitched, or Wedissimo. Beware of profiles with only glowing reviews that seem overly generic or too good to be true.

  • Verify Social Media Presence: Most reputable photographers have active social media accounts. Look for engagement on their posts, such as comments and tagged photos from clients. I don’t post that frequently to Instagram (my bad) but am a member of reputable photographers organisations This Is Reportage and Photographers Keeping It Real. The chances of any photographers listed on there being fake are zero.

2. Meet in Person or Virtually

Before booking, schedule a meeting with the photographer, either in person or via a video call. This allows you to:

  • Gauge their professionalism and personality.

  • Ask detailed questions about their experience, process, and packages.

  • Confirm their ability to communicate effectively and understand your vision.

If a photographer refuses to meet or is evasive, consider it a red flag.

Request contact information for past clients. Speaking directly with someone who has worked with the photographer can provide valuable insights. Legitimate photographers will have no issue sharing references.
