HOW TO AVOID FAKE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

How to Avoid Getting Scammed by Fake Online Wedding Photographers

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and capturing those memories is crucial. With the rise of online services, finding a wedding photographer has never been easier. Unfortunately, this convenience also opens the door to scammers preying on busy couples planning their big day, leaving them with nothing but disappointment and lost money. I had an enquiry from a couple last week who had been fooled into handing over a £300 deposit to a "photographer" who was totally fake. They weren't the only couple to fall for his convincing profile on Facebook, and they have no chance of recovering their money. Here's how to ensure you’re hiring a legitimate and trustworthy wedding photographer.

1. Do Your Research

Take the time to thoroughly research any photographer you’re considering. Here are some steps to follow:

  • Check Their Portfolio: A genuine photographer will have a well-curated portfolio that showcases their style and experience. Look for consistency in quality and diversity in their work.

  • Read Reviews and Testimonials: Search for reviews on trusted platforms like Google, Hitched, or Wedissimo. Beware of profiles with only glowing reviews that seem overly generic or too good to be true.

  • Verify Social Media Presence: Most reputable photographers have active social media accounts. Look for engagement on their posts, such as comments and tagged photos from clients. I don’t post that frequently to Instagram (my bad) but am a member of reputable photographers organisations This Is Reportage and Photographers Keeping It Real. The chances of any photographers listed on there being fake are zero.

2. Meet in Person or Virtually

Before booking, schedule a meeting with the photographer, either in person or via a video call. This allows you to:

  • Gauge their professionalism and personality.

  • Ask detailed questions about their experience, process, and packages.

  • Confirm their ability to communicate effectively and understand your vision.

If a photographer refuses to meet or is evasive, consider it a red flag.

3. Ask for References

Request contact information for past clients. Speaking directly with someone who has worked with the photographer can provide valuable insights. Legitimate photographers will have no issue sharing references.

4. Scrutinize the Contract

A professional photographer will provide a detailed contract outlining:

  • The scope of services (e.g., hours of coverage, number of edited photos).

  • Payment terms, including deposits and final payments.

  • Cancellation and refund policies.

Read the contract carefully and clarify any unclear terms before signing. Avoid photographers who avoid providing a formal agreement.

5. Beware of Unrealistically Low Prices

While it’s natural to want to stick to your budget, be wary of photographers offering prices significantly below the market average. Scammers often lure clients with "too good to be true" deals. Remember, professional photography is an investment, and quality work comes at a fair price.

6. Verify Their Legitimacy

Take steps to confirm the photographer’s business legitimacy:

  • Search for Online Mentions: Look for mentions of their name or business in local directories, forums, or news articles.

  • Inspect Their Website: A professional website with clear contact information and portfolio links is a good sign of legitimacy.

7. Protect Your Payments

When it comes to financial transactions:

  • Avoid paying in full upfront. Most photographers request a deposit, with the balance due closer to the event.

  • Use traceable payment methods like PayPal. Avoid cash payments or money transfers.

  • Request receipts for all payments.

8. Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off during your interactions with a potential photographer, trust your gut. High-pressure tactics, poor communication, or reluctance to answer questions are all warning signs.

9. Ask for Backup Plans

Reputable photographers have contingency plans for unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment failure or illness. Ask about their backup procedures and whether they work with second shooters or have a network of professional colleagues.

10. Rely on Recommendations

One of the safest ways to find a trustworthy photographer is through recommendations from friends, family, or other vendors. 70% of my wedding work probably comes from referrals and I would say it’s probably to best way to find a photographer who will get along with.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding photos will be cherished for a lifetime, so choosing the right photographer is essential. By taking these precautions, you can avoid scams and ensure your special day is captured beautifully by a professional.

Remember, it’s not just about finding a photographer—it’s about finding the right photographer who understands your vision and will deliver quality results. Take your time, ask questions, and don’t settle for anything less than you deserve.
